Restaurants to Promote Maine Lobster

8/7/2012

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER)  -- Want to do something to help Maine's lobster industry? Go out to eat!

The Maine Lobster Council is partnering with more than fifty restaurants in the state for a special promotion called the Lobster Lovers Celebration.

Restaurants will be offering lobster specials over the next few months, along with contests for free lobsters and other prizes---including a trip to next year's Maine Lobster Festival or the Los Angeles Lobster Festival.

The promotion came about as a response to the current price problem in the Maine lobster industry, caused by an unexpected large harvest of soft-shell "shedder" lobsters, which has driven prices paid to fishermen to near-record lows. Restaurant owners and chefs say they want to do something that will help the fishing industry, and selling more lobsters is a way to do it.

The Maine Lobster Council says there should be a lot of tourists in the state through the end of September, and that restaurants will continue the promotion through Columbus Day and well into November. The promotion plan also includes a special "Lobsta-Palooza" week in Rockland at the end of this month, where all sorts of businesses will be promoting lobster, as well as a special lobster restaurant week in Boothbay Harbor in September. The Lobster Council will be starting a new TV ad campaign encouraging people in Maine and New Hampshire to eat more lobster.
